Frequently asked questions.
What people ask us most before their first consultation. If your question isn't here, message me on WhatsApp.
Do you accept insurance or EPS?
I work on a private-pay basis. I issue an electronic receipt at the end of each session so you can submit it to your insurer or EPS for reimbursement (if covered). If your insurer needs a specific form, let me know before the consultation.
What ages do you see?
I see adolescents from age 15 and adults with no upper limit. For patients younger than 15, I refer to colleagues specialized in child and adolescent psychiatry.
Do you offer video consultations?
Yes. I see patients in person at my office in Miraflores, Lima, and online for patients in Peru and Peruvians abroad. Some controlled medications have legal limitations outside Peru; we'll discuss that if it applies to your case.
Are sessions available in English?
Yes. I see patients indistinctly in Spanish or English, both in person and by video consultation. Part of my clinical training was in the United States (Georgetown University, Washington D.C.) and I keep continuing medical education in English with Harvard Medical School and the World Psychiatric Association, so clinical English is part of my regular practice.
What is a first psychiatric consultation like?
It's a full clinical evaluation: we talk about what brings you in, your personal and family history, prior medical conditions and treatments. From there I formulate a diagnostic impression and a treatment plan, which may or may not include medication. The first consultation lasts about an hour; follow-up visits, about 50 minutes. We sometimes take a bit more time depending on the case.
What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor: I can diagnose psychiatric conditions, order tests, and prescribe medication when indicated. A psychologist provides psychotherapy. Many patients benefit from having both in parallel, and I actively coordinate with trusted psychologists and psychotherapists.
How much does a consultation cost?
You can ask for the current fee directly on WhatsApp before booking — I prefer to confirm in real time as it may change. First consultations and follow-ups have the same rate.
How long does a typical treatment last?
It depends on the condition and the person. Some acute cases (e.g. a contained depressive or anxious episode) can resolve in a few months. Others, such as ADHD or bipolar disorder, require longer follow-up. In the first consultation I'll give you a realistic estimate for your case.
Do you coordinate with psychotherapy?
Yes, actively. If you already have a psychologist or psychotherapist, I coordinate with them (with your authorization). If you need one and don't have one yet, I'll refer you to trusted professionals from my network based on your case and preferences.
Do you prescribe medication in the first consultation?
Only if, after the clinical evaluation, it's clinically indicated and we discuss it together. The decision is always shared: I explain options, expected effects and possible side effects before deciding.
What conditions do you most often treat?
Adult and adolescent ADHD, anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, panic, phobias), depression and bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), stress management and burnout, and eating disorders.
